Florida, Arizona, and Nevada Dominate the Top 10
Florida, Arizona, and Nevada emerged as the dominant states in attracting baby boomer migrants. Eight out of the top 10 cities with the highest influx of baby boomers are located in these three states. Clearwater, FL; Reno, NV; Orlando, FL; Cape Coral, FL; Surprise, AZ; Henderson, NV; Mesa, AZ; and St. Petersburg, FL all experienced significant increases in their baby boomer populations.
These cities also have a high concentration of baby boomers, with nearly 30% of their populations falling within this age group. Cape Coral, FL leads the pack with 29.9% of its population being baby boomers, followed by Scottsdale, AZ (28.1%) and Clearwater, FL (27.0%).
Billings, MT Attracts Out-of-State Boomers
While Florida, Arizona, and Nevada dominate the top rankings, Billings, MT stands out as a city attracting out-of-state baby boomers. In 2022, 1,842 baby boomers relocated to Billings from different states, accounting for more than half of the total 3,401 new boomers in the city. This unexpected inclusion in the top 10 highlights the appeal of Montana’s largest city for retirees seeking a change of scenery.
Foreign Boomers Flock to Florida
Florida not only attracts domestic baby boomers but also sees a significant influx of foreign retirees. Orlando welcomed 2,131 baby boomers from abroad in 2022, while Cape Coral, FL had the second-highest rate of boomers moving from overseas, with 1,268 new individuals in this cohort. High Point, NC Draws North Carolina Boomers
While the majority of the top cities for baby boomer migration are concentrated in Florida and the western states, High Point, NC stands out as a popular destination for retirees within North Carolina. Of the 3,051 baby boomers who moved to High Point in 2022, 81% came from within the state. This suggests that many North Carolina residents are choosing to retire in a city that offers a more favorable retirement environment within their home state.
